On paper you would think that this is a completely cut and dried game for Chelsea. Yep, nice three points in the bag for the blues, take it easy and wake up on Thursday morning without even remembering who it was that they played the night before. The best bookies agree, with Paddy Power giving a miserly 1-4 for Chelsea compared to an outside bet of 12-1 for a Liverpool win.
But just hang on a minute because Chelsea, with one eye on the upcoming fixture against Liverpool, might just decide to rotate their squad, which could leave them vulnerable against a Liverpool side that (on their day) can upset the big teams. To be fair, Gareth Southgate’s men are not playing all that badly, they just don’t seem to be able to bring it all together for 90 minutes at a time and tend to let in sloppy goals. The Chelsea game, coming on the back of a confidence boosting Premiership win, might just be the motivation they need to kick start their season.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have not really addressed the defensive problems so clearly highlighted against Manchester United and their results since then have merely papered over the cracks. If it all comes together it would not be a shock to see Liverpool run out as winners, so it’s certainly one to watch.
Jaxx Sports are offering 9-2 for a draw, which is tempting!
Final Score: 2-0
This was always going to be a long shot for Boro and in the end Chelsea proved to be too strong for Liverpool despite being well below par on the night. Gareth Southgate’s men defended well until mid way through the second half, without offering much up front, but once the Blues got their first goal there was no way back.
